My father, uncle, and grandfather cut trees with a two man crosscut saw on our farm in the upper Red Kill valley in days of yore. My father told me that they cut hard (you flatlanders would call them sugar) Maple up to 5′ feet in diameter. They drew them out to the skid way in log length (called a landing, these days) with a team of Belgian work horses Love the bench in the excellent image you shot, Jenny Neal. I can veritably feel the heat emanating from that fireplace when lit; nice stonework, too!
