The June Berry has many common names, including Shad Bush and Shad Blow, because it blossoms when the Shad have their annual migration up the Hudson. Actually, it is one of many species of Amelanchier, which produce berries that can be made into jelly. When in full blossom, they fill the air with a marvelous perfume to attract pollinators. Seeing them scattered on the mountainsides tells us spring has finally arrived.
