Would you mind sharing the location of where this photo was taken? We are beekeepers in East Durham NY and run an organic farm. We are interested in planting wild thyme for our bees and have heard stories about the wild thyme in Roxbury but have yet to find a patch. We are not looking to take any, we’d just like to observe the conditions that it enjoys growing in.
This was actually my old property in the Catskills – not in Roxbury – that is now owned by someone else. It was on a ridge with great drainage and rocky soil, which thyme loves. It may have been the reason that our bees survived winter up there.
Thanks Jenny, that’s super helpful. We are also the owners of Hudson Valley Bee Supply in Kingston NY, it’s great to hear that you bees did well when foraging on the thyme.
I’m in the Dry Brook Valley now and will be needing a packet of bees next year for my Warre hive and my L hive. My old hives survived two robberies from other bees, one winter completely uncovered on top of a ridge, and a house move – even when I dropped them twice at their destination. But I failed to get the electric fence up in time and a bear came along and destroyed everything!

Hi Megan

Bears are ruthless… thanks again for the information on the thyme!
I just wanted to add that I read on the BBC website today the article about components of the herb thyme being anti-fungal for bees https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20211122-bee-gold-why-honey-is-an-insect-superfood?utm_source=pocket-newtab
