Two pals couldn’t have picked a more idyllic evening to attend Table on Ten’s pizza night: an early evening drive through the balmy, bucolic mountains of Roxbury so astonishingly beautiful in the waning light that we had to stop a couple of times to get out of the car and drink in the atmosphere. (“What’s that? Sheep. Let’s stop. Hey Ewe!”) Hay, barns, lush undulating ridges, rail trails, stone walls and bridges over roaring creeks: a gasp of admiration at every turn. A quick jaunt past the restaurant into the hamlet of Bloomville, New York, revealed a picturesque rural scene of tractors, antiques and a white-sided two hundred year old church atop a meadow.

Table on Ten is a rambling multi-story, farmhouse wedged into an intersection, with a large garden complete with towering hemlock and benches for communal pizza eating. You will talk to your neighbours, and ours told us that their Friday night pizza was a regular ritual. The dining room is large and covers the ground floor and basement with stairs in between, laid out rather like a New York City duplex. The chalkboard on the fridge lists all the names of the local sources of the ingredients used in the menu and we recognized some names that are featured here on the pages of Upstate Dispatch.

For pizza night, diners are offered thin-crust pizzas roughly 11-12 inches in diameter for $15 a piece. Wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages are available. Last night we had the special and it was a very special: roasted garlic scapes, salted lemons and Parmesan with two eggs baked in. Utterly phenomenal pizza pie entering both our top ten pizza lists and one of us was a born-and-bred New Yorker. So there. The second pizza: the classic prosciutto and fresh basil.

The return journey was just as extraordinary: a dazzling blood red sunset, streaking expansively across the sky, bade us farewell as we zoomed away over the mountains. The solstice weekend couldn’t have got off to a more magical start.
